Strong and shallow M6.5 earthquake hits Alaska Peninsula, U.S.

 


 A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit the Alaska Peninsula, U.S. at 09:10 UTC on October 11, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 46.3 km (28.7 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.8 at a depth of 51 km (31 miles).

The epicenter was located 118.5 km  E of Chignik (population 87) and 670.8 km  SSW of Anchorage (population 298 695), Alaska.

Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, this earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami, NWS NTWC said.

There is no tsunami danger for the U.S. West Coast, British Columbia, or Alaska.
