The Ministry of Agriculture has taken steps to set up six
small scale milk processing centers with the aim of providing a glass of liquid
milk to students in rural schools. These milk processing centers are being
built with French aid of 13.9 million Euros.
Each center will process 5,000 liters of milk per day and
30,000 liters of milk per day will be processed in the six centers.
This was revealed at a recent discussion chaired by
Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to review the progress of proposed
milk processing centers in Wennappuwa, Attanagalla, Wariyapola, Polonnaruwa,
and Nawalapitiya.
Five milk collection centers will be set up affiliated to
each of these milk processing centers. This will enable about 12,000 dairy
farmers in the area to sell their milk at a reasonable price and increase their
monthly income.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said Rs. 450 million has
been provided for each of these milk processing centers.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage instructed the Heads of
Institutions in charge of Dairy Processing Centers to commence processing milk
at Wennappuwa, Wariyapola, Attanagalla and Polonnaruwa processing centers
before December this year.
