Private bus owners request to operate without conductors
The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) has
presented a proposal calling for the Transportation Ministry to approve buses
to operate without a conductor.
President of the LPBOA Gemunu Wijeratne stated that the
proposal has been made due to a drop in income resulting in a significant loss
of employees.
He said the proposal calls on the Transportation Ministry to
amend the necessary laws in order to operate buses without conductors.
The proposal in this regard has been submitted to the
Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation.
Gemunu Wijeratne pointed out that many buses were currently
operating without conductors or assistants.
He, therefore, called on the Transportation Ministry to
amend the clause in the Motor Traffic Act, that pertains to conductors, as
buses to operate ‘with or without’ conductors or assistants.
Wijeratne said a payment collection box can be placed by the
side of the driver and he expects the public will act in an honest manner by
placing their payments.
