The world marks International Workers’ Day

International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day or Labour Day in most countries, is commemorated today.

May Day symbolises labourers and the working classes.

The date was chosen by the American Federation of Labour to continue an earlier campaign for the eight-hour day in the United States, which had culminated in the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on the 4th of May 1886.

May Day subsequently became an annual event.

Sri Lanka first commemorated May Day on the 1st of May in 1927.
