Health Ministry suspends decision to lift mask mandate
The Ministry of Health has decided to suspend its previous decision to remove a law making it mandatory to wear a face mask in public places.
The Health Ministry announced that the decision was taken after considering the fact that large groups are gathering around the country to participate in massive protests.
On the 18th of this month, newly appointed Minister of Health Prof. Channa Jayasumana removed a law making it mandatory for individuals to wear face masks, except in public transportation and in closed spaces.
However, the decision was criticized by many individuals since it was taken at a time when the coronavirus pandemic was still not over.
Accordingly, the Health Minister speaking in Parliament yesterday said steps will be taken to reconsider the decision in question.
Issuing a statement today, the Ministry said the law making it mandatory for individuals to wear a face mask in public gatherings will continue to be in effect as it was before
