Sri Lanka’s ‘Dumbara Weaving’ recognized as a ‘UNESCO WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE’

Sri Lanka’s Traditional Craftsmanship of making Dumbara Rata’ Kala’la (Dumbara Weaving) has been recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The recognition took place at the Sixteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in Paris, France.

Punchi Nilame Meegaswatte, Secretary-General – Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO, chaired this annual gathering which brings together hundreds of participants – representatives of States Parties, non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions and other stakeholders – from across the globe.

The official declaration of recognizing Sri Lanka’s Traditional Craftsmanship of making Dumbara Rata’ Kala’la (Dumbara Weaving) as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, will be made on Wednesday (15).

Ambassador of Sri Lanka – Designate to French Republic and Permanent Delegation of UNESCO Professor Kshanika Hirimburegama speaking to News 1st said the Ministry of Buddha Sasan has taken measures to propose the historic Kandy Dalada Perahera as a World Cultural Heritage, next year.
