Sri Lanka’s Yohani releases new single Moving On through US label

 

Sri Lanka singer Yohani, who became an online sensation with her last cover song has released a single Moving On though Red Bull Records, a US-based label.

He last single ‘Manike Mage Hithe’ became first Sinhalese hit song in India, peaking at #1 on the India Top 50 Spotify Chart. It has racked up 179 million YouTube views up to November. Other covers of the song, with the rap section in multiple languages also went viral.

She mixes pop, R&B, hip-hop, and alternative in her songs.

Moving On, is mostly in English, with parts in Sinhalese and is about a break-up.

“It’s not a sad song for me,” Yohani said in a statement after the global release. “It’s about moving on from anything in life, but with confidence.

“You’re pushing through and embracing your power. It’s punchy, and you can dance to it, but it’s got a Sri Lankan vibe on the bridge.”

Written and directed by Dilanjan Seneviratne, the music video has been producted by Sri Lanka record label Pettah Effect and production partner Theewra.

Red Bull Records is headquartered in Los Angeles and is a subsidiary of Austrian beverage firm Red Bull.

Music and entertainment exports are a key part of many free trading economies of the world. Korea’s K-pop, sometimes subjected to suppression due to political resistence, has taken the world by storm after state intervention ended and a liberal rule came after 1987.
