Lalith Warnakumara elected as a member of parliament to fill Mahinda Samarasinghe’s seat

Wadduwage Manju Lalith Varna Kumara was declared elected as a Member of Parliament for the parliamentary seat left vacant by the resignation of Kalutara District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Election Commission announced.

“The Election Commission, in the exercise of the powers vested in the Election Commission by Section 64 (2) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, does hereby notify that Mr. Wadduwage Manju Lalith Varna Kumara has been declared elected as a Member of the Ninth Parliament for the Electoral District No. 3 – Kalutara to fill the vacancy caused by reason of resignation of Mr. Mahinda Buddhadasa Samarasinghe,” an Extraordinary Gazette Notification issued today by the Election Commission said.

Former MP Mahinda Samarasinghe resigned from his parliamentary seat effective from 25th November 2021 to take up the post of Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States and Mexico, left vacant by the retirement of Ambassador Ravinatha Aryawansa.

Warnakumara, who serves as SLPP’s chief organizer for the Bulathsinhala electorate, secured a total of 46,361 preferential votes in the 2020 General Election and is the next on the list.
