Heartbreak for Sri Lanka in Penalty Shootout
The Sri Lankan Football team who emerged the runners up of
the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa Trophy in the Four Nations International
tournament. The match ended in a 3 all draw and Sri Lanka lost 2-1 in the
penalty shootout.
The penalty shootout saw Sri Lanka go down by 3-1 as captain
and goalkeeper Sujan Perera, scored the only goal. The leadership he provided
to the team was exceptional but the Seychelles Goalkeeper had the last laugh
with one final block and steal a win from Sri Lanka. Earlier in the tounament,
Sri Lanka drew 4 all against Maldives, lost 1-0 to Seychelles and won their
first International match in 14 years when they beat Bangladesh 2-1 to book
their place in the finals with Seychelles.
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa presented the Trophy of his
name to the winning team. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was also present in
this historic occasion. Waseem was the star player for Sri Lanka with 7 goals
scored in this tournament as he won the Golden Boot award. The Golden Ball was
awarded to Sri Lanka captain Sujan Perera.
