Teachers strike: Education Ministry releases details on school attendance
Nearly 16% of students had reported to schools islandwide
when selected schools officially reopened for the primary section yesterday,
the Education Ministry has revealed.
Secretary to the Ministry Professor Kapila Perera said close
to 26% of teachers had also reported to schools and resumed academic
activities.
He further said that the Western Province saw at least 7% of
teachers and students returning to school.
Around 39% of students and 45% of teachers reported in the
Northern and Eastern Provinces respectively.
Meanwhile, the remaining provinces reported close to 15% and
18% of students and teachers respectively, Professor Perera said.
He said academic operations had continued without any
obstacles on the first day of school.
The Education Ministry Secretary further said that despite
the Principals’ and Teachers’ Alliance engaging in a trade union action, many
teachers had reported to work.
He pointed out that it was evident that the teachers
preferred to physically conduct academic lectures instead of online lessons.
