M6.1 earthquake hits near the coast of Torres Islands, Vanuatu

 


A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit near the coast of Torres Islands, Torba Province, Vanuatu at 07:26 UTC on October 18, 2021, at a depth of 96.5 km (60 miles). EMSC is reporting it as M6.2 at a depth of 80 km (50 miles). This is the second M6+ earthquake to hit Vanuatu since M6.4 at 04:44 UTC on October 15.

The epicenter was located about 68 km (42 miles) WNW of Sola (population 1 171) and 200 km (124 miles) N of Luganville, Vanuatu.

There are about 10 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).
