Father of children killed in Ragala house fire arrested
A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of five persons, including children, in a house fire in the Ragala area. Hiru News correspondent stated that he was the father of the children who died in this incident.
The Magistrate has ordered the police to obtain a report from the Government Analyst regarding the fire and submit it to court. A house in the central part of the Ragala estate in Nuwara Eliya caught fire last night.
The Magistrate has ordered the police to refer the bodies of the five victims to the Judicial Medical Officer of the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital.
Two children of the same family, their mother, grandfather and grandmother were killed in the incident. It has been revealed that the birthday party of the 1-year-old child who died at the house was held last night (07) and the fire had started at around 10.30 last night.
The cause of the fire has not been revealed yet.
Residents had heard the screams of a person from the area where the house was set on fire at around 10.15 last night. Accordingly, an investigation carried out by the residents of the area has revealed that the house in question is on fire.
Locals tried to contain the blaze, but the fire had already spread throughout the house. It was only after that the residents of the area had taken steps to inform the police about this. A subsequent search revealed that the parents, their daughter and their two children had died in the fire.
Ramaiah Thangaiya, 59, Sivanumuttu Lechchami, 54, Jeyakumar Nadia, 32, and their 11-year-old children died in the incident. The Ragala Police are conducting a special investigation into the incident, and the Government Analyst is also conducting an on-site investigation.
